Dir. Kevin Macdonald
An example of performative and reflective documentary.
Documentary made with dramatic reconstruction and interviews and VO from those involved. Features camera and sound work that you would expect to find in a drama feature film. This makes it even more gripping and immersive.
Grizzly Man (2005)
Dir. Werner Herzog
An example of performative documentary.
Unique as Herzog makes the film from footage made by Timothy Treadwell. Therefore Herzog edits it together to make his own story about Treadwell. Considering this, this is a particularly interesting film as it demonstrates the power of editing in film and specifically documentary.
Don't Look Back (1965)
Dir. D A Pennebaker
An example of observational documentary.
Unlike any documentary of its kind at the time, this film is purely observational and doesn't hide away from showing the darker side of Dylan. The film is very heavily constructed.
